Great sport is about excellence, leadership and healthy competition — values that are also central to the Visa association. That is why we support global sporting events, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Visa’s member banks play their part by running their own sports programmes, which help their national squads, individual teams and athletes to compete. They also organise promotions and competitions that give thousands of Visa cardholders a chance to see their sporting heroes in action.
Visa's FIFA sponsorship
Visa is proud to have announced its sponsorship of Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) events until 2014. During this period, Visa will have global rights to a broad range of FIFA activities, events and competitions, including two FIFA World Cups.
The biggest event in CEMEA is the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and Visa will develop a suite of programmes to continue expanding merchant acceptance, building member bank relationships, and growing tourism in that country. Other events that will be taking place in the CEMEA region include the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 in South Africa, FIFA U-20 World Cup 2009 in Egypt, FIFA U-17 World Cup 2009 in Nigeria and FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2009 to be held in Dubai.
As football is considered the world's favourite sport and FIFA estimates that more than 26 billion cumulative viewers in 214 countries watched the 64 matches that made up the 2006 event, this sponsorship promises to be beneficial for Visa, our member banks and the wider community.
The Olympic Games
Visa has been a worldwide partner of the Olympic movement since 1986, providing crucial support that enables many countries to take part. Without major sponsors, it is estimated that only 30 of the 200 competing nations would be able to field their teams. We are also proud to be the only worldwide sponsor of the Paralympic Games, which helps disabled athletes to shine on the global stage.
The Torino 2006 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games marks the 21st anniversary of our global Olympic partnership and our 11th successive Olympic Games. As part of our activities, CEMEA member banks will be supporting the
Visa Olympics of the Imagination children’s art competition, just as they have since the contest was launched at Lillehammer in 1994.
We are also helping up-and-coming athletes in the region through Team Visa, a programme that provides mentoring and financial backing to the sports stars of the future.
